Ferns come in many different sizes, colors and shapes. This tall Alsophila is also known as the silver fern and is a genus of tree ferns in the family Cyantheaceae and it is known to grow to heights of 10 metres.
The silver fern was used as an official emblem worn by the New Zealand Army since the Second Boer War and by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during both world wars, and all Commonwealth war graves of fallen New Zealand soldier have the silver fern engraved on their tombstones.
